Volunteering at First Church

The Discipleship and Community Ministry focuses on our life together as a congregation and the elements of discipleship that include events that draw us closer to one another, and to God.

Volunteering Opportunities

There are numerous ways you can serve First Church by offering your time and talents. We encourage you to lend a hand as a volunteer in the ongoing programs and events that are a part of our ministry and life together.

Our church school teachers help shape the lives and faith of the young people of our congregation. We’d love to tell you more about how to get involved.
For more information, contact  Audrey Webber if you would like to get involved in the 2019-20 Church School program.

Our ushers are a welcoming presence at Sunday morning worship, whether in the sanctuary, or on our online channels during COVID-19.

Be a welcoming presence assisting worship attendees on Sunday mornings and at special services. Ushers are on the frontline of FPC hospitality helping to greet and guide visitors and members alike. Serve every Sunday or periodically throughout the year as you are able. Training is provided.

To sign up contact Pam Morgan at ralphmorgan2@verizon.net or by using our sign-up system. Click here to volunteer.

Cross bearers lead the processional on a Communion Sunday or at special worship services throughout the year. We welcome youth participation!

To volunteer to carry the cross, contact Nadine Stewart at 212.206.7725 or nadineanddavid@rcn.com.

Our worship tradition includes a lay member of the congregation reading the prayer of illumination and first lesson. All ages are invited to serve.

If you are interested in participating as a lay reader, contact Nadine Stewart at 212.206.7725 or nadineanddavid@rcn.com.

Hosting coffee hour after worship is a fun and easy way to deepen your discipleship through the ministry of hospitality. Coffee Hospitality Hosts are responsible for recruiting two or three other volunteers to serve coffee after the 11:00 a.m. worship service and for providing a small snack of their choosing. Please note any allergens contained in the snack. The most common listed are Milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts), Soy, Wheat, etc]. Each week’s hosts are announced in worship. This is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones (be a host in honor of a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion), connect with others, and meet more of our members and visitors.

Pick a week, find your co-hosts, sign up on the sheet at coffee hour in the lobby, call 212.675.6150, or click here.

You don’t need to be a chef or even a foodie to join the Kitchen Work Group. We enjoy a wide range of activities from cooking, food shopping, baking, event and floral design, not to mention lots of ‘sampling’ and fellowship in our spacious kitchen. We prepare meals and event service for First Church functions throughout the year. Come join the fun! For more information, please email fpcnyc@fpcnyc.org.
